SALT LAKE CITY JAPANTOWN STREET

Once a vibrant hub for Salt Lake’s Japanese American community, Japantown was diminished by downtown redevelopment. GSBS is helping honor the neighborhood’s rich history, rooted in the vision statement, “Okage sama de” (I am who I am because of you). The plan envisions a future that embraces cultural inclusivity and resilience, and creates a venue worthy of hosting two of Salt Lake’s most beloved (and delicious!) annual street parties—the Nihon Matsuri and the Obon Festival. 

Winner of the 2023 APA Utah Beehive Award of Excellence, the first time this honor was awarded to a Utah planning project.
