PRICE FAMILY AMPHITHEATRE

The Price Family Amphitheater is an outdoor space for gathering, teaching, and performance at the University of Utah. It was developed as part of the transformation of the Old Law Building into the Department of Theatre. This project reimagined the building’s north side by converting an abandoned mechanical pit into a dynamic new amphitheater. Designed in collaboration with the donor family, the space reflects a contemporary vision while aligning with broader campus design standards. It also introduces new accessible routes to both the front and rear of the building, supporting a variety of uses from informal gatherings to performances. The site features a terraced planting wall that forms a small amphitheater, along with a flexible public plaza that accommodates 200 to 300 people. Water elements—including cascading pools and a splash fountain—enhance the space, which is designed to connect with nearby buildings and encourage comfortable outdoor engagement. Part of a 3.25-acre site with significant grade changes, the amphitheater supports a wide range of activities, from quiet reflection to civic ceremonies, musical performances, and festivals.
