Born and raised in Holladay, Utah as the last of 6 kids to a Dutch immigrant mom and a General Contractor dad, I was destined to end up in a field related to design, engineering or construction. Mom was always telling stories about the kid who stuck his finger in the dike to save the lowlands from a flood and dad was always building something and giving me the opportunity to help.
And then it happened: Dad left a set of drawings for a project he was bidding on open on the dining room table. As I looked through the document, it took only a moment before I was hooked on the art and science of architecture. Since that day, I cannot recall ever wanting to be anything but an architect. So in a way, I am living my dream. I’ve enjoyed the experience, the relationships and the projects that have become something of a legacy to my mom and dad. I haven’t designed a dike…yet. But, I have my finger ready—just in case.
