Big-D Construction Corporation purchased the Fuller Paint Building located at 400 South and 400 West, next to Pioneer Park. GSBS was commissioned to design a historic and LEED certified renovation of the building. The building is listed on the National Historic Register through the National Park Service.
The 50,000 square foot structure is the corporate headquarters of Big-D Corporation. To open up the building and introduce light into the interior, GSBS designed an atrium that cuts through all floors. Operable skylights allow for nighttime purging of air using three 16' diameter, slow moving fans making the massive structure a "heat wheel.”
The exterior design for the building restores the original painting scheme with the Big-D logo as a large mural. Interior design makes reference to its period of construction with many parts of the historic building preserved and viewable by the visitors and occupants. The offices, conferences and board rooms are wired for state of the art technology.
The site design reduces the urban heat island effects by providing shade and using a high albedo roof membrane. Storm water is held on site and is cleaned up before its release into the storm drainage system. Landscape and irrigation are low water use.
This building received a LEED Gold Certification. |
