This 17-acre site was master planned by GSBS to include a building site for the new Recreation Center and a future library for the City of Roanoke. The recreation center is a 36,000 square foot steel and concrete block structure with a combination of masonry veneer and metal panel exterior. The project includes two basketball courts, two racquetball courts, an aerobics room, a fitness room, nursery, arcade, an elevated jogging track, offices, locker rooms and flexible meeting rooms, all organized around a two-story glass atrium with a striking curved roof. GSBS was challenged with creating an attractive and serviceable building within a very tight budget. In the end, City staff was thrilled with a design that resulted in an attractive and valuable building for the citizens of Roanoke.
